Multi-factor authentication

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) provides an additional layer of security that helps protect your firm's confidential data. See Multi-factor authentication overview for more information.

To enable MFA in DT Max, you will need to perform the following steps.

  1. Obtain an Onvio firm

  2. Add staff to Onvio

  3. Enable MFA in Onvio

  4. Enable MFA in DT Max

Note: You must know the DT Max database encryption password in order to complete the setup of MFA.

Obtain an Onvio firm

DT Max uses Onvio, the cloud-based future of tax and accounting software, to implement MFA. You will need an Onvio firm in order to use MFA with DT Max. Please proceed as follows.

  • If you already have an Onvio firm, you can use that one.

  • If you don’t have an Onvio firm, you will need to contact our Support department to get one. They will provide you with a base-level Onvio firm free of charge that can be used only for MFA purposes. Note: At any time, you can upgrade this Onvio firm to a fully functional one by contacting our Sales department.

Add staff to Onvio

After you log in to your Onvio firm, you will need to perform the following steps (if you have not already done so).

  1. Set up a permission group
You don’t need to make changes on the second tab, Permission (you can leave each of the tabs set to Nothing).

  2. Add staff members

  3. Assign each staff member to a permission group

  4. Give staff access to Onvio Centre
This will enable them to log in to Onvio.

Enable MFA in Onvio

By default, MFA is optional in Onvio. If some staff members need to use Onvio but cannot enable MFA (e.g., because they do not own a compatible device), or if you have other reasons why you don’t want to require it, you can leave it optional. Staff members who need MFA for DT Max can still individually enable it. Otherwise, you can require it for all staff members, in which case they will be forced to enable it at their next login. The following articles provide more information.

Once you are able to log in to Onvio using MFA, you are ready to turn on MFA in DT Max.

Enable MFA in DT Max

Select Security system from the Preferences menu, and then choose Company database security policy. Follow these steps.

  1. If you haven’t already done so, set up a password for yourself by clicking the Change personal password button.

  2. Back in the Company database security policy window, enter your personal password and the database encryption password, and then click OK.

  3. In the MFA section, check the Enable MFA box.

  4. Enter your Onvio Firm ID (this is the same as your DT Connect ID).

  5. Click Apply changes.

  6. On the Sign In screen, enter your Onvio email address (Thomson Reuters ID) and password for the account for which you just enabled MFA in Onvio.

  7. Click the Sign In button.

  8. Check the device that you are using for MFA, and either approve the request, or retrieve a code that you can manually enter on the Sign In screen by clicking the Enter a code link.

Once you have completed these steps, every time you start or restart DT Max, you will be required to use MFA before you can access your data.
